Sooooo, a high school in Utah won’t use the “Cougar” as its mascot because it may offend women over 40 years old. What?? Yahoo Sports even goes on to say that the school board allowed the student body to vote and Cougars won by a landslide.
What do they tell the kids now? Yeah…well, you picked the wrong one so we’ve decided to become the CHARGERS! (True story, they really did pick Chargers over Cougars) Well, honestly, that offends my credit cards…and all teenage girls in the world, except for Utah.
Never mind the fact that the local college (BYU) is the Cougars…I guess this particular school board is showing how much smarter they are than those at the collegiate level.
Next thing you know people will start complaining about Chiefs, Indians, and Braves as mascots…but unless you’re in Utah, they’ll ignore you.
What do y’all think? Has it gone too far or should the kids’ choice be honored?

Seems silly to not let the kids choice stand…..a cougar is just a big cat to most people….and I would not be offended to be called a cougar….just saying
…..and on another note, think about the grown ups here in Madison who thought it was a great idea to use the high school initials on everything, from t-shirts to the banners hanging outside the school…..all I see every where is BJ….BJ……BJ……and then guess what the the first question I get form my husband is when he gets home from work after driving down Hughes Rd…..but the people in charge of that said our kids minds wouldn’t go there…..uhhh….yes it does…..Were they not ever teenagers?? Of course it does, but to tell you the truth that doesn’t offend me either…..its just plain funny
Hi Lisa!! I couldn’t agree with you more. And yes, having Bob Jones High School nearby shows you can have a name everyone deals with even under ridicule. I think the real problem with your response though, and this is VERY important so brace yourself….
WE’VE GOT TO FIND AN ALTERNATE ROUTE FOR STEVE TO DRIVE HOME!
Lol…thanks for the comment and please drop by again soon. Happy Bloggin’
Living in the uk this seems weird! But I guess we have strange or even stranger changes…..
Hello country! Believe me, it’s weird to us too. Is “cougar” a term used in the uk for women over 40 who are known to date younger men? If not, a good example from the US is Demi Moore. One of the articles I read yesterday referenced a TV show (Cougar Town starring Courtney Cox) as the reason why the nickname for women stuck, but I believe the show was actually long after the term became popular. Either way, it shouldn’t affect the mascot situation! Have a wonderful Thursday and thanks for stopping by! Happy Bloggin’
