Abbreviations for $400, Alex…

When I’m not where I want to be, which is behind my home computer, I’m where I have to be, which is behind a work computer. An Army work computer.

Please Note:  I’m not IN the Army; I just work for the Army. The reactions to that statement vary, but the most interesting was in one of my online classes.  I have to post a bio at the beginning of every class. It’s the same bio every time (duh! Work smarter and all that…), but this one particular class a student posted a reply to my bio, “Thank you for your service to our country”.

Awwwwww….

That was so sweet and instead of milking that situation for all it was worth, I replied, “Oh no, thank you, but no. I am not in the Army, I just work for the Army”, she replied that I helped the soldiers one way or another so it didn’t matter.  Now that’s stretching it, but who am I to argue? Bring on the praise if you makes you feel any better.

The reason why I mention all this is because the Army functions on Acronyms.  Which can always be entertaining.  For example…the following is a real and true statement…”The PM’s and PMS’s are responsible to update their ACRB’s, IDP’s, ULO’s, and keep up with P2, RMS, CEFMS, while managing all LCC’s, CLCC’s, FWI’s, and MIPR’s.”   See…wasn’t that fun?!

When in a world that revolves around acronyms and text messages that have all sorts of abbreviations, sometimes it is tempting to compose emails in the same manner.  Stop it!  This is when abbreviations and acronyms, go wrong. Very, very wrong.

Abbreviations that should not be used:

Red Hat Society hosted PMS – Pretty Marvelous Sale. (I don’t believe the Red Hat Society members can even remember what real PMS was…but just my opinion)

Fulton Unity Christian Knights…well, you get that one. Gooooo…FU…uhmm, KNIGHTS!

Wedding invites are telling you to STD! – Save the Date.  Not chlamydia.

Some emailed words that should never be abbreviated:

Analysts or Analyzed is not ANAL. Well, that’s kinda debatable.

Assistant is not ASS.  Again…I guess it could be depending on the person.

Here are some great photo examples of when not to abbreviate or turn into an acronym:

  1. I do think people sometimes take the abbreviations just a tad too far ;-)

  2. Har!

Humour aside, I agree with the student. You may not be in the Army, but you are in their employ. You count; you rock.

    1. Aww, I’m getting that warm sensation…hope that doesn’t mean I peed my pants…jk, thanks so much for your kindness!

  3. I’ve always considered most civilian employees of the military on par with those in uniform, and some in uniform mostly civilians in costume, and fewer still, wrong in anything but prison garb. Take it from an old Cold War Horse and USAF retiree.

Reference acronymns, got to love them: ALCS, NAOC, PRP, TDY, WAG, and PDA.

    TTFN,
    Mary Jo

    1. HAHAHA…that started out so sweet…and then the prison garb statement had me LOL! I recognize a few of those acronyms, but need to research a couple. I love homework!! And on a very serious note Mary Jo…completely serious….thank you so very much for your service in the USAF. I applaud YOU!!!!!

  4. SO FUNNY!!! Thanks for a good laugh this morning!

  5. When I first started working for the Army, I was very confused. It seemed like everyone was speaking a different language. I had been with USACE about six months, when I got a travel order from AMIII. He e-mailed me the information on where he wanted to go, the dates, etc. Then he said, “Use the OH funds.” I saw OH and thought Ohio. I went around asking everybody, what is the funding code for the Ohio project. After several days, I went to M.M. and asked him. He said, “We don’t have any projects in Ohio,” but agreed to look into. After awhile he still had not found anything, so asked me to forward the e-mail to him. When he saw the e-mail he started laughing, apparently OH means overhead not Ohio…
As a side note, M.M. picked on me for several days after that incident.

    1. HAHAHAHAHAHA…I’m dying over here! That is freakin’ hilarious. Wonder where I was that I didn’t enjoy in this ridicule, cuz that’s a good one! I remember when I was new to Alabama and someone said they were going to LA…my eyes got real big and I was like…(whispered) woooow…..remember I was just a young impressionable thing…and then the traveler informed me it meant “Lower Alabama”, not Los Angeles. Imagine my disappointment. :-( Hahahaha….

    2. When I first moved here, that one got me too. It took me awhile to figure out LA ment lower alabama. I was wondering why so many people from Alabama were traveling to Los Angeles…

  6. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OH MOMMA THAT WAS SO FUNNY!! between the baby video and your acronyms i am rolling. so funny. im gonna go reread it now. love you :)

    1. Well, hi daughter….didn’t those babes just make your day better?? Just think, ten years from now it’ll be my wonderful GRANDbabies making me giggle!! hahaha…and yes, they can be adopted! :-) Love you too baby girl, hope you have a great Wednesday. Miss you! (PS – all these men in the house…I’m gonna need some help with girl power)

  7. LSHIDMBBPBMAORA -Laughing so hard I dropped my breakfast burrito please bring me another one right away!

    1. HAHAHAHA, that’s awesome! I’d like to try and get that one to go viral :-) Thanks for the laugh this morning.

  8. I know what you mean–went from Air Force retiree to working for the National Weather Service. Our parent agency is NOAA–National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. I thought I ran into more acronyms than in the Air Force. My boss and I joked that NOAA really stands for the National Organization for the Advancement of Acronyms. Great blog BTW.

    1. Lol, love making new meanings for acronyms and that’s a great one!! And btw, thanks very much! Lol:-)

Tell me....dish...lemme know...
