Fallen soldiers…falling tears

So I said I would post some of my favorite pictures and call it a day…well, I lied.  You’ll understand why in just a moment, and I hope you’ll overlook my discretion.

As an ameteur writer, I am a lover of all words. But even I know when a single photo has the ability to reduce me to tears in milliseconds, no words are required…

  1. Love that image. Perfect choice for Memorial Day.

    1. Thank you EEE! Isn’t it just amazing? I can’t remember a time I was ever so moved by one photo.

      1. I also like Lee Teeter’s Vietnam Memorial painting. So evocative, especially on a day like today.

        1. Whoops, that should be Lee Teter. My bad.

        2. Yes, that is definitely one of my all time favorites, as well. Thank you for the reminder…and I don’t know about you, but I can’t hear Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” without crying.

  2. This reached into my chest, grabbed my heart and refused to let go. Even now it’s difficult to breathe. Shared to my Facebook page and my Twitter followers. Thank you Jill, from an old veteran!

  3. We say…Happy Memorial Day…but that isn’t what we really mean. We mean to say…Remember those who went before you, sacrificed some and sacrificed all. We mean to say…Thank you for the gifts you’ve given us: our freedom, our American way of life. We mean to say: Please God, let this be the last one.

  4. Teared me up too, in seconds.

    1. Isn’t it just amazing how something can have that affect on us in just a tiny amount of time? And I’m intrigued by the cycle of life…I can recall looking at pictures like this from the eyes of a daughter…then a wife…and now my first instincts are as a mother, with wife right behind it. I hope that makes sense. And I honestly hope it’s many, many, many years from now before I look on through the eyes of a grandmother. :-)

    1. I completely agree. Thank you for visiting!

  5. That is truly an amazing photo.
Sounds like Memorial Day is the equivalent of our ANZAC Day here in Australia.
Thoughts are with those who lost their lives fighting for freedom and for the families they have left behind.

    1. Thank you, and yes, they sound exactly alike. When is your day celebrated?

  6. We remember our soldiers on 25 April, the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand soldiers landing in Gallipoli during World War 1

  7. Just out of curiousity, we have Remembrance Day here in Canada, which is the same day as Veteran’s Day in the U.S. What’s the difference between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day?
    Great picture, by the way.

    1. Thanks and really good question. A fellow blogger (CG) made a comment yesterday that summed it up pretty well, “Memorial Day is a day to pay respect to those that have died in service of our country. It’s not Veteran’s Day which is in November. If you are going to thank a veteran, either do it every day or wait until November 11th. Today is a day that I use to reflect and pay homage to those I knew who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

  8. Perfect for memorial day…thanks for stopping by my blog and for the follow

    1. Thank you, I appreciate the same from YOU! :-)

  9. Catching up on my blog reading, just came to yours……”A picture can say a thousand words” and my tears are proof that my heart heard them all when I saw this photo. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Nancy, I wondered if I ran you off! Welcome back. And thank you very much. I shed plenty of my own tears over that photo. Phenomimal work…and amazing artistry.

      1. Hi, thanks for the welcome and lol….no you didn’t run me off. So many things going on I let my writing slide and the reading as well, I’ve made a new committment to myself to write at least 5 times a week even if it is a quick one. I feel aweful that I have not responded to the questionaire you sent to me, when I got it I thought too much time had gone by to respond…lol not sure how some of these fun things work. Thanks for thinking of me and including me. I’ll be checking your blog to see what you’re up to.

        1. Welcome back and it sounds like you’ve made a terrific commitment to your writing! Sometimes life gets in the way and we just need to re-focus. Glad to see you out here and don’t stress about the award. :-)

Tell me....dish...lemme know...
